The total number of nuclear warheads in existence around the globe has decreased somewhat since the end of the Cold War, but it still stands at a scary-high level.

The number of stockpiled warheads worldwide peaked in the late 1980s at about 64,000. Nine nations, namely the Russia, United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, North Korea, India, Pakistan, Israel, and —are all estimated to be in possession of about 12,700 nuclear warheads in recent times.

Nuclear warheads were swiftly decommissioned as a result of the signing of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Despite not being initially effective in halting nuclear proliferation, it eventually resulted in nations decommissioning the majority of their nuclear arsenals.

With each having about 4,000 nuclear warheads, the United States and Russia are the two nations with
the largest nuclear warheads.

As of 2022, it is estimated that approximately 12,700 nuclear warheads are still in use, with more than 9,400 in military stockpiles for use by ships, submarines, missiles, and aircraft.
